CHAPTER SIX

COMING OUT

I wait for Jake outside school. I stand right next to his bike. The second I see him, I ask, “So, the lake?”

“If you want,” he replies indifferently. He takes the lock off his bike.

“We haven’t been in a while. Come on, we can’t be like this anymore—we’ve been like dogs and cats lately. We need a lake moment.”

Jake smiles and says, “I take it you’re the dog, right?”

“Yeah, and I’ll bite you if you don’t come along.”

“Fine,” he answers.

Jake and I started going to the lake on our own when we were seven years old. It was hard to convince our parents that it was safe, that nothing was going to happen to us, that we would not do anything too crazy. Truth is, I have no idea why they allowed us to go, because by then, we had already gotten into so much trouble together.

Back then we just took off our shirts and jumped in the lake wearing nothing but our shorts. The first time I did it, Jake said, “Don’t you have a swimsuit?” I looked at him in his blue speedo. “Why do I need a swimsuit?” It seemed that my answer was good enough for him because he didn’t say anything else. Plus, our bodies looked the same—why did I have to cover it up?

Nevertheless, Debbie, Jake’s mom, disagreed. One day she came to the lake to check on us. I was about to dive off the pier when she asked me the same question: did I have a swimsuit?

“But I don’t need one,” I told her.

“Well, you do, sweetie. Girls and boys have different bodies and . . . ”

With my hands on my waist, I said, “Jake and I have the same bodies.” Jake stood up and showed his chest off above the water.

Debbie looked at us, smiled, and covered me with a towel. “Well, Alexandra, now they look the same but they are not the same and as you both grow up . . . ”

I interrupted her and said, “I know, I know, I will have boobs. But I don’t want them . . . ” I took the towel off and ran back to the water; Jake did the same. What could Debbie do?
